Order Summary at a glance

Site Genre: Pattern Group f

magnify imageFigureF7.1 Amazon.com offers a single, organized page that summarizes a complete order and provides links to edit the individual elements.

Background

For QUICK-FLOW CHECKOUT (F1) on a PERSONAL E-COMMERCE (A1) site, customers must be able to double-check orders before finalizing them. In the SHOPPING CART (F3) pattern, items are collected and summarized. Then a QUICK ADDRESS SELECTION (F4) and a QUICK SHIPPING METHOD SELECTION (F5) are made, and a PAYMENT METHOD (F6) is selected. This pattern describes how to present the information entered in these other patterns for final review by the customer.

PROBLEM

When finalizing orders, customers want to see everything related to what they’re ordering: the specific products, all the charges, and the billing methods, as well as where, how, and approximately when packages will be delivered. If any one of these elements is missing from an order summary, customers might abandon their purchases.

SOLUTION

magnify image FigureF7.4 Summarize all information that the customer has entered: the billing and shipping information, the items being purchased, and all the costs. Make it easy for the customer to change any of this information and to see whether the order still needs to be updated.

In the order summary, first let the customer know that the order still has not been placed, and provide high-visibility action buttons for completing the order. Then show the items being purchased and all the information that the customer entered: address, payment method, and shipping selections. Provide action buttons to edit these items in case they’re incorrect. Finally, calculate and present the total costs, including shipping and taxes.

Other Patterns to Consider

Add a PROGRESS BAR (H13) at the top of the order summary page to reinforce that this is the final step for customers before the order is completed. Create HIGH-VISIBILITY ACTION BUTTONS (K5) to encourage shoppers to complete their orders. Provide ACTION BUTTONS (K4) on each of the element sections for editing, including shipping address, shipping method, billing method and address, and the items ordered. Display the rows of items in a GRID LAYOUT (I1), in CONTENT MODULES (D2). Link to your PRIVACY POLICY (E4) to help answer any final questions that customers might have about your information use policies. Link to your return policy to enable EASY RETURNS (F9) and to assure customers that they can change their minds if they’re not satisfied.
